Highlands Youth Advisory Board

Each spring, HY board members are selected through a rigorous application and interview process . HY board members must reapply to the board annually, although past contributions are taken into consideration during the application process.

The application process takes place each spring to fill vacant positions for the following school year. Youth entering grades seven to 12 in the upcoming school year, who live in Issaquah Highlands, are welcome to apply.

Selected applicants will be contacted for a peer interview in early May, and board members will be selected and notified by the end of May.

Members are expected to meet the following requirements to serve on the board:

• Attend monthly meetings on the second Sunday of each month from 2-4 p.m., Sept.-May, at Blakely Hall.
• Attend the annual team building event on Sunday, June 11, 2023.
• Assume a leadership role during the school year.
• Be an active member of the board through attendance and participation in events/activities outside of Sunday meetings.

The total time commitment varies, but members should plan on 3-10 hours per month during the school year. Additional opportunities to volunteer will be available over the summer and through the school year.

Yes! Most events and service projects planned by the HY Board are open to volunteers. If you aren’t able to make the commitment required to be a member of the HY Board, or aren’t selected this year, please join us as a volunteer! We are happy to help teens reach their service goals within the Issaquah Highlands community. The best way to stay informed about opportunities for youth is our Highlands Youth E-News. 

Each year we strive to balance the composition of the HY Board with diverse members that represent the Issaquah Highlands Community and have passion for the mission of Highlands Council. If you’d like to become a member of the HY Board, we encourage you to:

• Attend HY Board run events for youth before applying so you have a better understanding of what the HY Board does.
• Volunteer at community events that are open to youth participation. This is a great opportunity to talk to current HY Board members about their experiences!
• Have your own email address and check it regularly.
• Spend time in the Issaquah Highlands community to learn what you love and where you see areas for improvement.
