When Barbara Hendrikse first started working at Issaquah Highlands Community Association (IHCA), she was looking to re-enter the workforce after taking a year off to become a mom in 2006.
She began as an accounting contractor in 2007, taking on various roles such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, financials, collections, escrow, payroll and human resources (HR).
Now, 15 years later, she is IHCA’s senior accountant and HR manager, focusing mostly on accounts payable, financials, payroll and HR. Barbara celebrates her 15th anniversary of working for IHCA this month.
“The fun part of my job is being able to work with the different departments and planning fun events for everyone to enjoy,” she says.
Issaquah Highlands was still very much in the construction phase when she started at IHCA, she noted. No retail had been developed and only a portion of the community was built.
“To come in each day and see what this community has turned into has been such an amazing blessing,” Barbara said. “To hear people talk about how amazing it is to live here (or people that don’t live here talking about how much they like our holiday lighting, parks, stores, etc.) really makes me feel proud to work here.”
While cleaning out her closet a couple years ago, Barbara found her collection of shirts from previous Highlands Day events. There were nine shirts in total, she added, and each one told a different story and theme for the year.
“I am so proud to be part of a community that cares so much about the people that live here and goes the extra mile to do things such as Grub & Groove events to bring neighbors together, or putting treats out for dogs to enjoy as they walk by,” she said.
The IHCA staff is thankful for Barbara’s hard work and dedication. IHCA Executive Director Sarah Hoey says the office would not be the same without her contributions.
“When I came to IHCA eight years ago, she was and continues to be, an invaluable resource,” Sarah said. “Not only does she possess the vast history of Issaquah Highlands but is the most organized person I have ever met. I call her the office guru! We are so lucky to have such a long-term employee who makes us all shine. Thank you, Barb, for all do for this community every day!”
Jordan Rousu, IHCA executive assistant and custom ARC coordinator, says Barbara is the hardest worker she’s ever encountered. She feels lucky to have crossed paths with her.
“She is reliable, level-headed and conducts every action with compassion for others,” Jordan said. “IHCA, and the Issaquah Highlands community as a whole, is so fortunate to have such a dedicated individual choosing to spend her time with us. Thanks for all you do Barb!”
