Spring is here, and Pacific Northwest homeowners are excited about the warmer weather, outdoor activities, and brilliant sunshine we missed during the winter months. Spring also brings a fresh home maintenance list; spring cleaning your home is crucial for long-term quality and operation.

In winter, our area experiences heavy rains, high winds, snow, critter invasions, and fluctuating temperatures; go beyond window-washing this spring and look deeper into home maintenance to ensure you can enjoy the warmer months ahead. Lower your stress and minimize unexpected issues by following this checklist designed for the upcoming season.

Please use caution if performing yourself or use a trusted professional service.

Check Out the Exterior

  • Roof: The cold, wet winter takes a toll on our roofs as the freeze-thaw cycle shifts shingles out of place. Secure shingles, especially around gutters and eaves, before they fall off. Be sure to clear any moss or debris in the process, as they increase wear on your roof, and the eyesore can even result in a fine from the homeowners association.
  • Gutters: Spring rains are on their way, and your gutters do an important job maintaining your roof by directing moisture. Make sure gutters are clear and positioned to take runoff far enough away from your home’s foundation.
  • Doors and Windows: Check seals on your doors and windows for wear and tear over the winter. You can easily replace door seals and touch up window caulking to prevent rot on surrounding trim and walls.
  • Outdoor Walkways, Driveways, and Living Areas: Start by pressure washing these surfaces to remove moss and stains, then assess heavily trafficked areas for signs of wear. Wood, stone, concrete, and brick all need to be cleaned, sealed, and regrouted according to the material’s needs. Cracks and wood rot can pose a serious safety hazard and put a damper on your summer fun.

Freshen Up the Interior

  • HVAC: Replacing your furnace filter is vital to your HVAC system’s longevity. While buying high-quality filters in bulk online can save tens of dollars, routine maintenance with your annual professional HVAC service can save you tens of thousands in future potential HVAC repairs.
  • Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Take a few minutes to perform a system test on your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, then another few minutes to educate your family on what to do in case of an emergency. Make sure adults know the locations of fire extinguishers and are familiar with their use and operation.
  • Appliances: In addition to cleaning inside (and, if possible, behind) your fridge, oven, washer, and dryer, take time to assess the safety and function of water and gas lines and dryer vents. Avoid fire hazards by degreasing hood vents and clearing accumulated debris from dryer areas. If you used a fireplace for extra coziness last winter, consider a fireplace service and chimney sweep.
  • Moisture Control: Grab your brightest flashlight and head to your basement or crawl space. Are there any visible stains, drips, musty smells, or standing water? These signs of moisture could lead to mold, rot, and serious health and safety risks to your family and your home.
  • Pest Control: Bugs and rodents may be a vital part of our ecosystem, but we can agree they are not welcome guests in our homes. Be proactive with a pest inspection, especially in attic and garage spaces.
